(BIWABIK, Minn.) – Giants Ridge – Minnesota’s premier golf destination set in the rugged beauty of the Mesabi Iron Range – announces both of its championship courses, The Quarry and The Legend, were honored in Golfweek’s annual top resort course rankings.
Golfweek’s “Ultimate Guide to Golf Course Living and Great Escapes 2024” ranked The Quarry in a tie for 32nd in its “Top 200 Resort Courses in the U.S.” rankings, a three-spot improvement from the 2023 list. Situated on the site of a former sand quarry and iron ore mine, the Jeff Brauer design was the only Minnesota course in the top-65 of these rankings. Also tying for 32nd with The Quarry was the Hankins Course at Silvies Valley Ranch in Oregon. Ranking 31st was Pinehurst No. 4 in North Carolina; finishing below The Quarry at No. 34 was Mossy Oak in Mississippi.
The Legend rose a whopping 15 spots over the prior year in the same rankings to a tie for 104th. Also tying The Legend were four other layouts – the Circling Raven Course at Coeur d’Alene Resort in Oregon, The Preserve in Mississippi; the Mountain Course at Ventana Canyon in Arizona and the Ocean Course at Hokuala in Hawaii. Carved out of the Superior National Forest, The Legend is a true northwoods Brauer design featuring towering pines, giant fairways and majestic views of the Wynne and Sabin Lakes.
Golfweek’s team of course raters determine the publication’s annual course ranking lists. Each year, the panel evaluates courses, grading each nominated layout based on 10 criteria. According to Golfweek, “[the raters] also file a single overall rating on each course. Those overall rankings on each course are averaged, then each course is ranked against other courses.”
